The Fuzz Face is one of the most cloned pedals of all time, and there are so many versions of this that it makes my head spin. I’ve owned several, many of which were more similar than different. I really love the current Dunlop mini versions. They are awesome because their diminutive size and pair of knobs makes them some of the coolest looking pedals around, but they also sound really good. It’s hard to get a bad sound out of a pedal with just Volume and Fuzz knobs. I’ve found great success by turning the Fuzz up full-blast, with the Volume around 3 o’clock. Using my volume knob, I have access to various shades of fuzzy goodness, and every one is enhanced by my Vox wah. It’s a classic sound that will make you play for hours. “THey all have their own voice, so you should experiment and figure out what you like best.” If you’re having trouble putting the perfect pedalboard together, I’ve found that finding terrific matches is a great way to start. For example, if you took the latter two pairs I mentioned, you’d have killer wah, fuzz, delay, tremolo and reverb sounds—that’s a fantastic and versatile rig consisting of just four pedals. If you have extremely limited space, a small setup like the Karma Suture/Dispatch Master combo will fit on top of your amp, and you can use your volume knob to get various shades of dirt from the Karma Suture and adjust your ambience as needed with the Dispatch Master. I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at pedals that were made for each other. What pedal pairings do you adore? What has surprised you? I hope that as you continue to explore different sounds, you find combinations that excite and inspire you, and that you continue to make beautiful music. ToneReport.com 17
