TONE TALK //
Remember when you tried to sound like Jimi Hendrix at your
school talent show, and you didn’t? Let’s face it—none of us
will ever sound just like Jimi, because he was Jimi. What he
did for the instrument at the time was unparalleled, and he
created some of the most legendary tones in all of guitardom,
all of which are still loved today. Wah pedals are sought after
for their ability to produce vocal tones and accentuate certain
frequencies. It’s a lot of fun to use the whole sweep, but
they also work great when you leave them in one position to
emphasize a certain frequency for a solo or rhythm. Evidence
of the popularity of this sound comes courtesy of the various
“cocked-wah” pedals that are available today, such as the
Daredevil Atomic Cock. Numerous incarnations of the Cry
Baby and Vox wahs can be purchased, along with many
other boutique versions including offerings from Real McCoy
Custom and Xotic. They all have their own voice, so you should
experiment and figure out what you like best.
