This may be the best reason to get into DIY pedal
building, or at least the most deeply satisfying one.
Many stompbox junkies don’t initially realize that
they are quite capable of building a pedal themselves
that is as good as anything they’ll get from a
manufacturer, and sometimes for a lot less money.
Once this realization sets in, the idea of putting
together an entirely self-built pedalboard is bound
to follow. Writing, recording, and playing one’s
own music is already a very creatively satisfying
pursuit (or it should be, anyway), but doing it all
with custom-built gear adds another layer of pride
and satisfaction to the proceedings that is difficult
to top. And I don’t know about you, but when I’m at
a show and I see strange, unmarked enclosures on a
guitarist’s pedalboard, I’m always intrigued, especially
if the tones are really happening. Cultivating an air
of mystery around yourself
can be fun and rewarding.
