Many stompbox junkies don’t initially realize that they are quite capable of building a pedal themselves that is as good as anything they’ll get from a manufacturer, and sometimes for a lot less money. Once this realization sets in, the idea of putting together an entirely self-built pedalboard is bound to follow. Writing, recording, and playing one’s own music is already a very creatively satisfying pursuit (or it should be, anyway), but doing it all with custom-built gear adds another layer of pride and satisfaction to the proceedings that is difficult to top. And I don’t know about you, but when I’m at a show and I see strange, unmarked enclosures on a guitarist’s pedalboard, I’m always intrigued, especially if the tones are really happening.
