FROM THE BUILDER’S MIND ORANGE GETAWAY DRIVER The Orange Getaway Driver was designed to sound like an old Orange “pics only” OR100 that I modified back in the mid ‘80s. This turned out to be one of my favorite sounding heads at the time as it had a really cool saturation character and used to destroy all my other old Oranges and Plexi Marshall 45s, 50s and 100s. This amp had more gain but still screamed the cool ‘70s tones rather than modern sounding high-gain tones. That’s what I really liked about it! I set about to try to put the essence of this character into a pedal design. I ended up using three single-ended, class-A JFET gain stages with the third stage trying to reproduce what the output stage of the original amp was doing. I wanted the pedal to have very low output impedance—even in bypass—but I also had 32 FR O M TH E B U I LD ER ’ S M I N D // o ran g e g etaway d river
