SFT is good because it adds a little bit of grit . I like the Blues Driver , it ’ s heavy . The other Catalinbread pedal that I love is the Echorec , it ’ s the sound that Syd Barrett and Rick Wright had on the early Floyd stuff , that ’ s a beautiful sound . The Big Muff in front of the wah gets that ridiculous “ Wah- CHHHHH !” sound that ’ s all over the Swervedriver records . But it always changes around , there are phases — the Boss Heavy Metals were all over Raise but now they ’ re locked away .
TRW How has gear changed since you guys started ?
J Digital gear has taken over and the stuff we like has become more vintage , really . But I like the fact that you can record music on an iPad and I really like the fact that you can put some headphones on and play at home . And , with Logic and stuff , you can get a [ virtual ] Fender amp and add a pedal . The amps and pedals we use are kind of the same what we ’ d use back in the day .
A The techonology is such that you can email songs , and everyone has home recording .
Once again , it seems like guitar bands are out of the
mainstream , and even rock bands don ’ t seem to have a lot of guitars in the mix — are we at another “ Guitar is dead ” moment of history ?
J When people say “ guitars are dead ” they mean rock music is dead . I look at bands headlining festivals at home and they sound so awful , and I look at bands ’ photographs and stuff , the shades on , trying to look cool , and I don ’ t know if I can take much more of this . But I don ’ t think the guitar is a dead instrument . We like guitars , we like the Stooges , Black Sabbath , Neil Young , the Sex Pistols , but guitars can be geeky .
