C olorsound WOW-FUZZ The Sola Sound and Colorsound names carry a lot of weight in the vintage pedal arena, and it’s not for nothing. You may know them from the various incarnations of the Tone Bender fuzz, as well as other iconic effects like the spectacular Overdriver and the mighty One-Knob Fuzz. The Sola Sound company also made more than a couple fuzz-wah combos under the Colorsound moniker that varied in quality from pretty great to unspeakably wonderful. Its new version of the Colorsound Wow- Fuzz, created in partnership with David A. Main of D.A.M. pedals and Stuart Castledine of Castledine Electronics, is certainly the latter. Its silicon transistor-based fuzz is an authentic reproduction of the original, with a fat, silky tone that perfectly complements the dramatic, highly musical sweep of the inductor-based wah. The custom-wound vintage repro inductors probably have 14 TONE TALK // something to do with this. And in the interest of maximum authenticity, the striking orange enclosures are even pressed on the same machine that pressed the original ‘60s models.
