one and three octaves below the original . The Root toggle switch here essentially selects a clean-tracking lower octave in Unison mode , or summons a feeding frenzy of lowerpitch-piranha-bots to chaotically masticate the signal summation in a dynamic signal slaughter to end all . Finally , the Square dial at the top of the control surface does what it says on the tin and adds crazy fuzz to the input signal , which is a welcome garnish to an already tasty techno-cake . This is definitely the next pedal that should be unceremoniously duct-taped to Mark Mothersbaugh ’ s guitar . I think I just typed my way into needing this pedal .
To rejig one of my favorite philosophical punk ruminations and apply it to our artistic medium , the guitar is not dead , it just deserves to die when it becomes another stale cartoon . Though many will disagree , I feel we must fight for the right to remain relevant in this rapidly changing musical landscape inwhich even non-instrumentalists can become tomorrow ’ s musical geniuses . The pedals mentioned today will arm us in this fight . Don ’ t get me wrong , I enjoy cranking up a tube amp , plugging straight into the input and ripping the opening riff to “ Hell ’ s Bells ” as much as anyone and I suspect I always will , but the other half of me is screaming for change and I can ’ t help but think that grunge and guitar rock in general derailed some incredible hybrid progressions that were in bloom going as far back as the late ‘ 80s with Swans , the Wax Trax scene , industrial and all the other truly alternative realms of music that were being explored . With all the crazy devices at our disposal now , it is time to pick up where that spirit left off and make something futuristic and new . Take a crazy pedal , plug something into it , make a new noise and make it the sound of 21st century .
