Traversing the
Twilight Tone Zone
Imagine a world not of recognizable guitar
tone, but of musical noise. A dimension of
sound, things and electric ideas that shoot
through cables into transmitters. These
devices obliterate signal sources beyond
recognition and blow them out as chaotic
cacophonic confetti. What goes in must
come out . . . but what comes out might be
transformed beyond recognition. It might
be hideous, it might be beautiful, it could
be terrifying, but it will be heard and it will
cause psychotic reactions.
The time is nigh for a pedalboard paradigm
shift. Gone are the limitations and extinct
are the dinosaurs of trad-rock tone
approach. Let’s explore the outer limits of
string vibration translation and speak in
some very new tone tongues. Becoming
conversant with the stranger things available
is a great way to talk our way out of a sonic
slump and become pioneers of the new.
It takes courage and a cavalier approach,
but it is essential for the survival of the 21st
century guitarist.
