EARTHQUAKER DEVICES SPEAKER CRANKER As the description from EarthQuaker Devices reads, the Speaker Cranker is not a booster, it is an overdrive pedal. Its one knob may make you think otherwise, but plug into it and dime that sucker and you’ve got some gnarly, natural grit that makes any amp bark. It’s responsive to your touch, and it works great both before and after other dirt boxes. I’ve had great results running mine before overdrive pedals as a way to push them into further saturation. As far as fuzz goes, I prefer the Speaker Cranker placed after. This way, the fuzz responds to the Speaker Cranker in a similar manner to a cranked amp, and I love the tones I get that way. I really haven’t found a setting in which & the Speaker Cranker was not welcome. Used on its own, it gives you touch-sensitive dirt that is great for rhythms and old-school lead lines. In conjunction with other distortions, overdrives and fuzzes, the Speaker Cranker can open them up in ways you didn’t think EVERYTHING previously possible— it’s easy to use, sounds fantastic, and plays well with others. I like mine so much I bought another one when a second version when top-mounted jacks and a soft bypass switch were added. ToneReport.com 13
