I’m one of those guitarists who spends 99 percent of my guitar playing time electrified. As a result, the bulk of my gear is comprised of electric guitars, amplifiers, and effects—so much so that up until a few years ago, my only acoustic was a Taylor Big Baby that my wife gave me as an engagement present over 15 years ago. I used it mainly for strumming around the house and for quiet songwriting. Recently, 36 TONE TALK // We made this shift for two reasons. First, it provides many more options for where we can play. Secondly, it reduces the amount of gear we have to lug around. But for most of our songs, I’d grown accustomed to using various effects as integral parts of the arrangement. I had only one option: I had to assemble a pedalboard that is intended to work well with and retain the character of an acoustic guitar. And in the process, I ended up exploring lots and lots of acoustic-centric effects.
