It’s also a performance tool, and the Deluxe does all the live tricks that people used the Echoplex for. Once I got to the point where I really felt that the Deluxe sounded like an EP-3, and since it was a digital delay line we were using (and not tape), it seemed like it would be a crime not to leverage that unused digital capability.
