I won ’ t deny it , I was one of the people thrown for a loop when Ryan Adams veered off from alt-country and Americana and made a hard left into ‘ 80s “ alternative ” back in the early 2000s . It ’ s not that I didn ’ t enjoy him channeling his inner Smiths , New Order , and Cure tendencies . It ’ s just that those weren ’ t the songs and sounds I was expecting from him . It ’ s all good . Artists should grow and experiment . Since that time , Ryan has been slowly ramping up his use of chorus and big ‘ 80s hall reverb sounds and it all came to a head on his 2014 self-titled album . So it comes as little surprise that Adams ’ first piece of signature gear is a multi-effect from JHS featuring Volume , Chorus , and Reverb — VCR . The pedal has a single stomp switch and individuals on-off toggle switches for each effect . The Reverb is based on one of Ryan ’ s favorite hall sounds and the decay is pre-set . The potentiometer allows you to dial in the effect level . The Chorus is based around the sound of ‘ 80s analog chorus pedals and has a cool feature for a single knob control , turning the knob to the right increases the rate and decreases the depth . Turning to the left , the rate decreases and the depth increases . The Volume part of the circuit can run from unity
Jeorge Tripps and Way Huge rolled into NAMM with a heavy fuzz twofer . The Russian Pickle looks to be their re-imaging of the Swollen Pickle in a stripped-down and Russian-flavored format . Aside from the unfortunate timing of more Russian influences , the Russian Pickle offers a simplified control set of just Volume , Tone , and Distortion and the heavy low-end and more pronounced midrange you ’ d expect in a fuzz pedal of this color . The Conquistador on the other hand offers even more mids , searing highs , and the ripping Velcro of a gated fuzz . Both pedals come in Way Huge ’ s new narrower enclosures and feature anodized finishes and tank-like construction .
