| upfront welcome Editor’s desk It was a great privilege this past month researching our Viscount cover story and having the chance to interview two of the people integral to the company’s success. Now in her 70s, Maureen Carr, the wife of Viscount’s legendary founder John Carr, still has vivid memories of how the couple came to Australia virtually penniless and went on to build a caravan empire. Equally interesting was Garry Dunn, Viscount Industries Managing Director for 18 years who told us about the many challenges that eventually brought the empire to its knees. While that was more than 30 years ago now, the story is as relevant today to anyone in the industry fighting to stay ahead of the competition and give demanding buyers what they want. We celebrated a business milestone of our own this month when Roam was shortlisted for its first award. This amazing cover (left), photographed by Daniel Linnet, was shortlisted in the “Maggies” national magazine cover awards. As Viscount’s co-founder Maureen Carr says, small business is a hard slog! It’s great getting some recognition and celebrating wins along the way, especially with the readers and advertisers who’ve supported us from the beginning. Speaking of readers, our last survey showed you overwhelmingly wanted to get a copy of Roam from more places at times when you’re not travelling. So from our next issue, Roam will be available through independent supermarkets around Australia.
