The entrance creates an inviting ambience. Their approach was to create a cosy, interactive, user friendly environment, appropriate to human scale. It is a space designed to be adapted to different purposes easily, while developing a communication with its user. “We think the strongest instrument in achieving this is the extraordinary use of simple and familiar materials and ideas,” says the duo. DESIGNING A HUMAN EXPERIENCE To start off they came up with a few simple, yet very strong design ideas and shaped the whole space within that framework. “One of these ideas is to form an iron frame work and panels that create a multipurpose background, allowing easy arrangements for different needs like showcasing glasses as well as art works,” they explain. Another idea was to assign a light, familiar, friendly element – something simple in form and size – and generate a space using it all around. They decided on cork yoga blocks, from Duplas , and ended up hanging 550 of them in a 105m² area, 95 of them are light sources. They hung a four-metre-long plywood table laminated cork, supplied locally, on both sides – from just four corners of the ceiling. // FEBRUARY / MARCH 2018 23 www.wisaplywood.com PEFC/02-31-112 Promoting Sustainable Forest Management www.pefc.org Agent in Southern Africa: www.npp.co.za Tel: +27 (0) 21 700 2800 // FEBRUARY / MARCH 2018 23
