Also seeing a happy customer with the services I’ve rendered. To see that
I’ve satisfied their needs.
HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR FUTURE?
Capitalising on existing infrastructure that I’ve got. My employees’
knowledge and know-how and implementing that in the market,
maintaining a good quality company, and rendering quality services.
I’d also like to work on a bigger scale, basically, emulating what we’re
currently doing throughout South Africa and other countries.
WHAT BIG PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF?
What we’ve done so far, we’ve done the ‘joy of jazz’ project (Timber iQ,
issue 34) and I came back from a project for the magnificent Anantara
Medjumbe Island Resort, off the coast of Mozambique (Tanzanian border
side), we did an island revamp there. I’ve done Sparrow Rainbow Village,
which was one of my starting points. The village was the answer for me, it
was a R310-million project in 1998, and it is the biggest dome village in the
world. So, it was a nice project to do.
We’ve been building lapas since 1999 and have completed about 2 000
roofs since we started the business. Build Up always conducts a project in a
professional manner whether it’s a small lapa in garden or a big
entertainment venue.
The more challenging the project, the more it appeals to me. The
Medjumbe Island project was nice because we had to design roofs that can
withstand tropical storms and be able to handle the harsh island climate.
Medjumbe Island is extremely isolated, about 14km of the coast and 2
900km by truck from Johannesburg. We had to move the 40 tons of roofing
material off the mainland to the island this required 15 boats to complete.
Build Up had to do all aspects of the project from logistics to installation
due to the unstable army and rebel conflict in the central of Mozambique at
the time. None of the service providers were willing to cross the areas
where there was conflict. The daily challenges were met, problems were
solved and the client’s needs were satisfied. I really had to capitalise on my
staff to deliver on time.

WHAT IS YOUR WORK PHILOSOPHY?
Be attentive to the smaller details. This will lead to the success of bigger
things. If you make the most of everyday, tomorrow will look after itself.
