OVERALL FESTIVAL
Various businesses held demonstrations throughout the festival. Turf &
Trees had outdoor power products including chainsaws mill and chainsaw
carving, Knysna Honorary Rangers displayed an enchanted Knysna Forest
display with bird and animal sounds. Tool Time had a ‘Build your own Candy
Dispenser, Picture Frame or Tool Box’. Ezigro Nurseries had a build your
own wooden box, paint with Woodoc gel stains, tree bicycles and plant a
tree. Vermont Sales and Strand Hardware showcased woodworking tools
and accessories. Wood-Mizer and Austro/Norwood mills were also part of
the daily demonstrations.
An informal survey held at the venue revealed that exhibitors and
visitors alike preferred Timber Village as a venue because of its charm,
forest-like atmosphere and uniqueness. It was also noted that these assets
capture the feeling of ‘old Knysna,’ which means that as a venue Timber
Village contributes to the festival’s aim of reviving Knysna’s
timber heritage.
Participants also said that the venue has sufficient space for current
needs and could accommodate growth in future. Kimberley Snook, who
was a participant says that the look and feel was neat and tidy. “We feel
there was a good mix and representation of trades at the show.” Theo
Stehle says. “Apart from the amazing resurrection after the destruction
caused by the fire, the festival definitely exceeded my expectations, and I
would say that with this festival the foundation for future festivals was
certainly reinforced and firmly established. It was the best Knysna Timber
Festival ever. Everything was very well organised.”
Live music by Southern Sons and local DJ, Mr G, entertained visitors and
various catering concessions were available to purchase food, drinks and
snacks. The festival committee did not nominate a financial beneficiary for
2017. However, the KTI did provide some non-profit organisations with free
exhibition space and assisted businesses affected by the fire and
organisations that aid fire victims.
