Timber iQ April - May 2018 // Issue: 37 | Page 3

EDITOR'S NOTE First step on a long journey I t’s April already and its hard to believe. Not so long ago we were at the HWZ wood conference (page 8), sharing insights about the industry and now we’re preparing for Totally Concrete! Wow, time really does fly when you’re having fun. I am indeed having fun, absorbing all there is about the industry. As a newbie to the industry, it is rather interesting as we look at the skills and training gap. Why is there a gap and what could’ve caused it? Read the article on page 34 to see what some experts have to say. I enjoy getting a better understanding of the industry and people who have contributed to its survival. Donald Fuchs of Donald Fuchs Machinery, schools us about his time in the industry and jovially shares that he’s qualified by experience (QBE) (page 54). That made me laugh, its clear that he’s full of life and loves what he does. We love you too, Donald. Keep up the good work. Each project is unique, and clients always seek to push boundaries and set trends. The Aura Café in Sandton is no exception, have you ever seen a café (located in a hotel) that specifically seeks to integrate with hotel guests as well as passersby? Well, it is exactly what this café is all about. Read on page 26, to find out how Cottle & Bergh Architects (C+B) made it happen. You know, I’ve come to the conclusion that you can build anywhere, Cape Reed International supplied and constructed thatch roofs over a safari park that is located on what used to be a landfill site (page 22). With the right team, same goal and passion to succeed – it's incredible what can be achieved. As we live, and we learn, it’s great to know that the industry is open to teaching those who are unaware (like myself) of the intricacies that weave the industry together. Thank you for your openness, it is really appreciated. Get more Timber iQ news, events and projects online at buildingafrica.co.za.
