OFW Distressed OFWs can be transformed into agri-entrepreneurs A ny distressed OFW can turn his or her life around by embarking on a new route, that of being agri-entrepreneurs. This was the assessment made by Senator Cynthia Villar, who also happens to be chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food. The Lady Senator, who is also director of the Villar Social Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Governance (Villar SIPAG), said during a recent press conference that this was owing to the renewed commitment of the government to support the agriculture sector. Villar also noted how more and more OFWs have increasingly become attracted to invest in the production of high-value crops and in agri-business. “The agriculture sector can very much provide jobs to OFWs displaced by the downturn in the petroleum industry,” she pointed out. She said the public is also starting to reap the benefits from legislative efforts to train farmers on modern farming techniques and financial know-how. Villar’s foundation also hosted last November 22 the 7th OFW and Family Summit that focused on giving livelihood OFWs in agriculture at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. This summit also recognized OFWs who turned successful entrepreneurs in agriculture or ‘agri-preneurs.’ Aside from inspirational talks by these success stories, attendees also had a chance to win a house and lot from Camella, a motorcycle from K Servico, Kettle Korn Cart, Pangkabuhayan Showcase from All Day Supermarket, and Appliance Showcase from All Home and Savers Appliance Depot. reference : pna.gov.ph 30 Credits: senate.gov.ph Senator Cynthia Villar, chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food. “The agriculture sector can very much provide jobs to OFWs displaced by the downturn in the petroleum industry,” she pointed out.
