Thurston WI
We had an excellent meeting in
March, Lily & Adrian Turner from Yum
Yum Fudge gave us a interesting
talk on their Fudge interspersed with
samples of the different sorts they
make, members eagerly purchased
their favourites at the end of the
evening, there were also ones suitable
for diabetics and vegans. Our May
meeting is on Thursday May 9th (a
week later than normal due to local
Bulldogs Going from Strength to Strength
elections) is our AGM and Resolutions
meeting, plus photos of our Centenary
Celebrations in March. On Thursday
June 6th Viv Newman is telling us
‘With billhooks & Stick, they cleared
out the Ditches’ all about the land
army girls in the First World War. Both
meetings are in the Cavendish Hall
Thurston at 7.30 pm, further details

TH E FLYER | MAY 2 0 1 9
Bury St. Edmunds Basketball Club
closed the 2018/19 regular season
out strongly, with a depleted fi rst
team knocking-off Colchester Cobras
while David Wise’s dramatic last
second score against Brightlingsea
Cossacks notched an all-important
win for the Reserve side that saw
both teams qualify for the Suffolk
Senior League post-season playoffs,
as they face trips to Brightlingsea and
Clacton, respectively, at the end of the
month as each team looks to prolong
their season. However, the biggest
successes for the club have been away
from competition…
The Bulldogs’ “Get Back Into
Basketball” sessions on Monday
evenings at Skyliner have given lapsed
players around the area an opportunity
to play basketball regularly, while April
also sees the launch of the Bulldogs
“Skills School”, an after school player
development programme led by Junior
Team Head Coach, Seb Benford.
“It’s been vitally important to us that
we live our values as a club” said
Head Coach Arron MacDonald, “These
two programmes allow us to truly
offer ‘Basketball for All’ and serve our
community. We’re really proud that
both of these sessions are being well-
supported, but there’s always room for
more new players!”
Such has been the success of the ‘Get
Back Into Basketball’ sessions, the
club is looking to expand these going
into the summer, to offer a Women’s
only training session in the hopes of
eventually launching a Women’s team
in Bury St. Edmunds.
In addition to these two sessions, the
Bulldogs are also running the club’s
fi rst ever Summer Camp at Skyliner
Sports Centre, headed up by Coach
MacDonald, and there are still limited
places available. For more information
on the club, visit www.burybasketball.
com, or follow us on facebook, twitter
or Instagram at @BuryBasketball.
Lawshall WI
For the April meeting, the ladies of
Lawshall WI had lots of creative fun
learning how to paint on silk and how
to create different colours. As well as
making some really lovely cards and
bookmarks, everyone agreed it was
extremely therapeutic and relaxing.
So next time you’re feeling a little
stressed, why not have a go…
The other thing we would really like
to highlight is the magnifi cent efforts
of all the ladies of ‘Stitch & Bitch’ and
their contributions to the warm baby
project. Their nimble fi ngers have
so far supplied bonnets, booties and
blankets to 30 different hospitals. A
letter of thanks saying how much
their efforts are appreciated has been
received. And of course, I’m sure
everyone will add their own thanks
to that. Although we organise it, if
you would like to join ‘Stitch & Bitch’
you do not need to be a member of
the WI. All are welcome. It is held on
the 3rd Thursday of each month at The
Swan. You don’t even need to knit ( or
crochet, or sew …. ) you can just come
along for the company and a chat.
And if you want to learn, someone will
happily show you the ropes. If you’re
new to the village, it’s a great way to
make new friends
We hold our meetings on the 2nd
Wednesday of every month and our
next meeting; which is our annual
meeting, where we will discuss the
upcoming year and events , is on
May 8th at the village hall. (it’s free
to come along as a guest – and we
promise a very warm welcome!)
If you think you might be interested
in joining us , or if you’d like to
ask us a question, please email
