recognise West Suffolk NHS Foundation
Trust’s support of student resilience
The Student Nursing Times Awards
2019 has shortlisted West Suffolk
NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT) in
the Student Placement of the Year:
Hospital category. When a student
is studying for a nursing degree
they have the opportunity to go on
a placement; a chance to work in a
real-world situation with healthcare
professionals to improve their clinical
skills and training as a nurse. But WSFT
goes the extra mile for its students
by offering them a professional
advisor programme. Students about to
progress into their third year are given
the opportunity to be linked with a
senior member of staff, for example a
senior matron, for support and advice
as they start to plan their future career
pathway. The education team has
also created a peer mentor scheme,
where students get to meet each
other confi dentially to discuss their
experiences and take ownership of
their acute setting learning experience,
feeding back with any concerns or
particular comments about their
placements to the education team.
After fi nishing their placement at
WSFT, one second year student nurse
said: “Being a peer mentor enables
students to gain skills they wouldn’t
ordinarily gain as a student nurse.
Boosting confi dence and enhancing
communication skills along the way,
I now feel confi dent talking in large
groups, teaching students through
evidence-based practice and being an
advocate for other students.”
The shortlisted teams will present
their application to a panel of judges
at the Nursing Times head offi ce, with
the overall winners announced at the
Student Nursing Times Awards on
Friday 26 April at the Grosvenor House
Hotel, London.
Mars and The Pleiades – as British
Summer Time approaches Mars will
be visible in the evening to the south
of the Pleiades open star cluster. This
cluster also known as the Seven Sisters
and Messier 45 contains middle aged,
hot B-type stars in the constellation
of Taurus. The Pleiades is amongst the
nearest star clusters to Earth and is the
cluster most obvious to the naked eye
in the night sky.
Saturn – is emerging from behind
the Sun and visible in the dawn sky
but you will have to be an early riser
(3am –5am approx.) to catch this gas
giant. On the morning of 29th March,
the moon and Saturn have a second
March meeting with the mesmerising
ringed planet fl oating to the upper left
The Pleiades Star Cluster
of the moon. Did you know! The Sun
accounts for 99.8% of the mass of our
solar system and you could fi t over a
million Earths inside the Sun!

Myths of Equity Release Mortgages
Myth 1: You no longer own
your own home
False. A Lifetime Mortgage does
not affect the ownership of your
property. You will remain the owner
of your property until the second
of you dies or moves into long-
term care. Subject to the provider’s
criteria, you are also free to move
home.
Myth 2: You can end up owing
more than the value of your
home Mortgage, with the remainder of
the tax-free cash you release yours
to spend entirely as you wish!
False. All plans from lenders
approved by the Equity Release
Council feature a ‘No Negative
Equity Guarantee’, which means
that you or your heirs will never
owe more than the value of your
property. Should your property at
the end of the plan be worth less
than the amount borrowed, the
remaining balance gets written off. Myth 4: You must make
monthly repayments
Myth 3: You can’t release
equity from your home if
you have an outstanding
mortgage
False. In fact, repaying an
existing mortgage is one of the
most popular uses of a Lifetime
False. You don’t have to make
any repayments and the interest is
simply added to the total amount
outstanding. However, many
Lifetime Mortgages products allow
you to repay a percentage of the
total balance each year penalty-
free.
Lifetime Mortgage products have
changed and could signifi cantly,
and securely, boost your later life
fi nances. Why not fi nd out today
how much tax-free cash you could
release from your property?
