WZUP my fellow Maritimers’??? Still coming at you from the East Coast,
keeping those dredge ships working… Putting new sand on these historical
beaches up and down the Carolina’s.
Although I’ve been out at sea for about 40 years, this next maritime biker
is a true, “Legend of the Sea”, with over 50 years in the industry and now
enjoying his retirement.
Jimmy “THE ROCK” Doucet started back when the boats were made out of
wood and the men were made out of steel. He sailed the sea with the true art
of navigation… a compass and the stars, something that would put a newbie
in a panic without the computerized navigation they have these days. He
started in the day where they didn’t send you to captain school, and no radar
classes. The only schooling you had was doing it hands on... learning from your
superiors.
“The Rock” started with Gulf Fleet in the 60’s... Back then, they didn’t hire
outside captains, you had to work your way up. At the young age of 21, he
found himself as a captain in the North Sea. Although the boat life kept him
away from home, he has had the pleasure to work in many different countries,
from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Sea, moving rigs across oceans to hauling
rice and corn to Jamaica.
Jimmy has logged in many, many hours at sea. That old sea dog has worked
on some large tugs with some great companies, 17 years of his career being
with Otto Candies. He retired from L&M BoTruc in 2015.
Jimmy started out with dirt bike racing and then worked his way up to a
Harley, taking a break, having a family, riding again and now that his children
are grown and graduated from college, he enjoys his retirement days riding
around on his custom ordered 2001 Dyna Low Rider! He told me that he was
a life time member of the Milwaukee Hog Chapter and he is a member of the
Houma Hog Chapter, riding whenever and wherever he can with his club.
There you have it folks, a true “Legend of the Sea”... So, here’s Jimmy’s story,
keep the thunder rolling and tell me yours. If you would like to be featured as
a Maritime Biker send pictures of your work and what you ride and a story to
[email protected] and let your story be told.
