Guiding Principles for Communicating Data Juice Analytics believes that using data stories allows organizations to escape the broken method of sharing data through Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint documents. Gemignani has outlined five guiding principles to help organizations think differently about how they communicate data. 1. Bring a message and a point of view to the data. The data cannot speak for itself. The person putting the data communication together is the expert and should provide the end user with a clear perspective. 2. Think about your audience. Consider what their job is and what actions they can take. Have empathy for the end user of the data in order to deliver data that’s going to be useful to them. 3. Create a guided path through the data. Provide a step-by-step journey through the data in a logical flow leading to important endpoints. 4. Know the actions that you’re trying to lead people to. Through a guided pathway, the user should know exactly how to apply the results for smart decision-making. 5. How could the information be delivered in a way that allows people to collaborate and thereby make better decisions? It’s rare that people are working with data on their own; they are typically working in groups—discussing and collaborating. The goal is to enhance collaborative, data-based decision-making. “Training is expensive, requires time, and takes people off the job. Our analytical applications help balance those two sides and deliver really efficient training across an organization.” Outcomes Applications Together, HealthStream and Juice Analytics help their clients become smarter and more informed users of training resources and products. They have partnered to create several outcomes applications that address important areas of health systems related to talent and workforce challenges, such as employee engagement, safety training, and turnover. Commenting on the applications, Gemignani says, “We built a solution that is an interface for managers, executives, and other administrators to be able to look at the data and understand how they are delivering training. We help our clients understand where people are excelling, where they are struggling, and what type of educational tools will address those struggles and help them be more successful.” KnowledgeQ KnowledgeQ is one of several applications Juice Analytics has built in conjunction with HealthStream. KnowledgeQ focuses on the annual mandatory training that occurs in health systems across the country, and through delivery of information and intelligence, it ensures better outcomes and more efficiently delivered training. KnowledgeQ has three core features: 1. Compliance: Provide visibility for administrators at hospitals to understand who has taken the classes that they’re supposed to take and identify the situations where people have not. 2. Knowledge: Increase knowledge of the workforce— goals can be set for the workforce and progress can be monitored and compared with similar organizations. 3. Deliver: Give organizations tools to efficiently deliver training. Help organizations make critical decisions while enhancing their overall knowledge. Workforce Analytics Juice Analytics and HealthStream have also partnered to build a workforce analytics tool for healthcare human resource leaders. This application gives HR leaders visibility across their organization, allowing them to see the big picture of how they are performing across their workforce, where their challenges are, and what they can do about those challenges. Turnover is an example of how this application can be used to assess organizational performance. Gemignani explains, “Often turnover is something that is driven by the management structure. This solution allows us to have the visibility to find those trouble spots, identify turnover causes, and take action. We can look at how an
