“Going forward in compliance, it’s critical that
we all understand that we are going to be
driven in a different way than we have in the
past. Just consider the fact that our main
revenue streams are not necessarily coming
from hospital-based services.” Officer at Providence St. Joseph Heath, a
$24-billion company with 130,000 caregivers in
seven states. Vacca, who has over 30 years of
healthcare compliance and auditing experience,
is responsible for the oversight of compliance,
audit, risk management, and information security.
Sheryl Vacca shares this advice as she explains
how drastic changes in healthcare are pushing her
organization to adapt its approach to compliance.
Vacca is the Senior Vice President and Chief Risk In a recent Second Opinions podcast, Vacca
identifies the five healthcare shifts that should
compel those in compliance to make adaptations
of their own.
National Regulations Are Loosening
In discussing national regulations, Vacca
emphasizes the effects that politics are now
having on the field of compliance. There have
been efforts to change components of the ACA,
attempts to restructure Medicaid and Medicare,
and with healthcare at 18% of GDP spending, it
is a target for reducing cost. Vacca explains, “We
have to be especially cognizant of what is
happening nationally because it is driving the
changes in compliance. Everyone knows that
regulations in healthcare can be very constricting.
But as we’re moving forward we’re finding that,
with our current administration, we are seeing
some loosening of regulatory requirements.”
