Fresh flowers make me smile every time they
catch my eye and I try to always have them
somewhere in my house. If I’m really busy, a
single perfect rose plucked from the garden
in a crystal champagne flute will do the trick.
Candlelight softens everything and allows me
to ignore the nagging voice in my head telling
me “I must clean that”, when I’m just too
tired. Your sense of smell is closely associated
with feelings of wellbeing so try scented
candles in glass jars. They are safe and no
mess and available at the supermarket. My
current fave is Apple Spice, as it reminds us
all of my mum's house.
Use Your Treasure
Good memories evoke warm feelings of love
so display precious family pieces that remind
you of happy times and people you have
loved along the way. My father's police hat
hangs proudly on our hall stand alongside
my stepdad's cowboy hat. Both constant
reminders that I was blessed to have had
these two wonderful men in my life.
Don’t save things for a special occasion,
instead make everyday a wee bit special
using your treasures. We eat with my nana's
silver cutlery every day and have done for
years, and port definitely tastes better out
of my mother-in-law's Waterford sherry
glasses. Yes, they can’t go in the dishwasher,
but the two minutes it takes to hand wash
a glass is definitely worth it for the pleasure
it gives me to use beautiful things.
It’s All About You
Your home is a reflection of you and should
tell your story. It should be a combination
of your background, travels, interests and
passions. Remember that you are a unique
combination of many things so your home
doesn’t have to stick to one style throughout.
You can blend industrial with country, or
contemporary with traditional. Eclectic style
combines a variety of periods and styles
giving us licence to be quirky. The key to a
successful blending of styles is repetition of
accent colour. Choose one or two favourite
colours and add regular pops around the
room. Sticking to no more than two colours
of timber and in a space works best.
