Dedicating quality time to shared
interests has helped Naida and
Howard’s marriage stand the test
of time.
The Grovetown couple tied the knot
on May 16, 1959, and have been
married for almost 59 years. Their
shared love of playing cards and keen
interest in sports, has helped their
marriage last almost six decades.
They grew up just down the road
from each other in Grovetown,
their families part of a tight-knit
community that
got together often
for rowing regattas,
tennis and rugby
matches and euchre
tournaments.
While they were from quite different
backgrounds, at a certain age they
noticed each other and Howard was
pleasantly surprised to find that
Naida Sutherland wasn’t as “uppity”
as he had previously thought.
“She was very good at having a
laugh, she’s even made me laugh
sometimes,” Howard says.
“I’ve made him cry more,” Naida says.
Howard must have thought Naida
was a bit of alright, because he used
to pick her up in his little Ford Prefect,
drive out to Marfells Beach and give
her driving lessons. It was fun and
only a little scary, he says.
The pair stayed in touch when Naida
attended Teachers' Training College in
Auckland for three years, and caught
