Celebrate a day of love with a twist Just as life is a journey, so is love. The bonus of the journey of love is that it’s a journey shared by two. It’s a journey that is happy, exciting, full of surprises and full of special moments, one of which may be a wedding. For me, this is extra special as I get to be involved in the wedding ceremony as the Wedding Celebrant. Heather Sorensen shares her experiences that have made a special day extra special. Creating a ceremony with a lasting memory is rather special. These are some of my favourite ceremonies I have been privileged to be a part of. • A sand ceremony is a great way to create a lasting memory. The sand can be natural, such as the wedding on Arapawa Island when the bride shared the golden sand from the beach where she grew up, with the groom’s black sand from the West Coast – two distinct layers and then a combined one. Couples can also choose specific colours to combine for various reasons. One bride chose to carry a beautifully crafted glass bottle instead of flowers and then she, the groom and his two children layered their sand with a wee gap at the top of the bottle that was completed with sand from their honeymoon. • How about a surprise ceremony? There was the engagement party that turned into a wedding. The birthday party that became a wedding. The friends and family car rally ended with a wedding at the final stop!! • What better way to make a toast than with your own wine and that is what couples who choose a wine ceremony get to do. The bride pours her white wine into a carafe and the groom pours his red wine. The result: a unique Rosé that they toast each other with. • It’s an opportunity to have some fun too. On one ocassion, the bride walked in first and then the groom and his best man danced in. The keen All Black and Wallaby fans who arrived together in their rugby gears (and then went away and changed during a reading). The best man who presented burger rings, then chatter rings before the real rings, and so the list goes on. • There was the time I learnt some Portuguese so that I could speak to the bride’s father when he escorted her into the ceremony. So many memories of so many happy occasions that are part of some amazing love journeys. It’s all about making the special day, special to the couple embarking on their journey of love.
