20 minute drive away. Definitely be
sure to splash out and book one of
their Austral Suites – with your own
private pool this romantic room is
perfect for a kiting honeymoon.
The highlights
The small section for beginners can
get a bit tight but is surrounded
by rocky islets, you feel safe and
secure and can stand throughout so
learning is easy. The team is fun
and enthusiastic and definitely adds
another dimension to the experience.
The vibe here is also more relaxed
than Le Morne and you can really get
into the chilled island way of life.
Where to stay
LUX Grand Gaube has just recently
reopened and offers a magical, luxury
experience with quirky touches just a
10 minute drive from the center. Dine
in their fabulous Turkish restaurant,
grab a burger on the beach, choose
your flavor at their vintage ice-cream
limo or taste island rums in their
treehouse bar. You may never want
to leave! For those looking for a
more intimate stay, 20 Degrés Sud
is one of the best boutique hotels
on the island and is located just a
Top tip
Anse La Raie is not as busy as Le
Morne but is still very popular,
especially with locals who flock to
the beach on the weekend. If you
want to enjoy the spot without the
crowds then book your lessons for
early morning during the week. There
is also little else around the center
so be sure to pack in some drinks
and snacks in case you need a break.
BEL OMBRE
Arriving at Bel Ombre, my heart sank.
The sea was mirror flat and kitesurfing
didn’t look like a possibility.
However, after a short walk along the
beach, the clouds started building
and with them came some wind. A 12m
was pumped up which proved to be the
perfect kite for my 50 odd kilos
and I was up and riding in no time,
although the team at the center did
have to assist with the launch as
beach space is limited. With just a
handful of other riders on the water,
I appreciated the space. Kitesurfing
further down the lagoon, the water
did become a bit deeper, leaving
me unable to stand, with a slight
current, however the KiteGlobing boat
was always on hand to fetch me if I
ran into trouble.
