Nestled in the scenic hills of Trelawny , the Bunker ’ s Hill Tour is a must do for locals and foreigners . After a full 45 minutes of driving on what could arguably be the worst road in Jamaica , you will experience an educational , relaxing , friendly and mouth-watering adventure which will leave you salivating for more .
The warm welcome by Ms . Gloria and her team had me reminiscing about growing up in rural Jamaica . Oh what priceless childhood memories ! The charming personalities of the staff were the perfect complement to a location which offers a lush , well-manicured lawn set next to an easily maneuverable river for swimmers and non-swimmers alike . Visitors have the option to set up their own picnic or to dine in the lunch area swinging over the river . Whatever the choice , a fun-filled and relaxing day is guaranteed .
The experience began with a guided tour which lasted approximately 60 minutes . Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and covered clothing as you will have to contend with steep inclines and rough terrain . Delroy , our tour guide was extremely helpful and animated as he shared the captivating history of the area . The excursion had us traversing the cave which was home to the great Captain Cudjoe of the Maroons . Cudjoe , was a runaway slave and was said to be responsible for the petition that was signed to recognize the Maroons as an independent people . With what was perhaps the best tasting authentic Jamaican food , Ms . Gloria tantalized our taste buds and had us wishing we lived there . Steam fish , brown stew chicken and stew pork were must haves on the menu . Jamaica ’ s yellow yam ( which is the food accredited to legendary sprint sensation Usain Bolt ’ s talent by many ) coupled with green bananas and dumplings was the foundation of what was a finger licking , palate satisfying eating experience .
Forget about diet as Ms . Gloria offered up the famous ‘ Blue Draws ’ ( potato pone ), sweet potato pudding and cornmeal pudding with the perfect caramelized sugar on top as dessert . A heavenly delight if ever there was one .
The beautiful , clean and alluring river which runs through the property will invite you in so be sure to pack your swim gears . The lush green lawns also provide the idyllic setting to relax , chat with friends and the capturing of these moments on camera .
I rate The Bunker ’ s Hill X-perience and River Tour a 4.5 / 5 ... It is a breath-taking adventure that I highly recommend .
