Demons and Angels - Emma Wilson

3rd place

My foot catches on the lip of the concrete and I begin to fall. I close my eyes and place my hands out in front of me to catch myself. The shock of falling sucks the air from my lungs, leaving behind a burning sensation in the back of my throat. Any second I am about to hit the ground, but I never do.

Instead I am lifted back to my feet by hands that know exactly where to settle upon my waist. A touch that sends a tingle up my spine.

“You okay?” a deep voice resonates through the air. He lets his hands fall off my waist, and suddenly I feel cold.

A response would not escape my lips, even though words like “yes” and “thank you” filter through my brain. When I realize I look like a complete fool, I turn to face my saving stranger.

My heart skips a beat, stops, then sputters when I see him. His blonde hair with streaks of gold hangs halfway down his ears, and combed off to the side. His nose, small and centered. And I don’t think anyone’s lips could look so soft and tempting. But what catches me off guard are his ice blue eyes that look so lively.

“Who are you?” I ask, the words tumble uncontrollably out of my mouth. I squint my eyes close in embarrassment, but they snap open to his voice.

“Demon to some, angels to others,” his voice resounds around me, “well, technically according to my birth certificate my name is Quinten Stoneway. But anyway, I am Quinn hoping to be your angel,” he says. I can’t help but smile, and his eyes light up brighter. I am finally meeting my best friend's "notorious" cousin.

Reid Ruess has been my best friend for eight years, since we were twelve. I have never met his cousin before. But Reid told me that Quinn has always been off on foreign exchange trips and traveling.

“Nice to officially meet you Quinn Stoneway. I am Kirsten,” I reply. Again, he smiles.

“Reid, told me I would find you here. Though I didn’t think my cousin would have a friend this pretty,” he teases. My ears warm and my cheeks taint a light red.
