YOUNG CHRONICLE
The History of St. Valentine
Valentines day is celebrated as the day of love. But Rambo and Pranks’s parents keep telling them that every day is
the day of love. But why do people celebrate Valentines Day? How did such a day come about?
There are several stories behind Valentine’s Day. But, it is believed that St. Valentine was a priest in Rome, long
time ago. During that time, the King made a law that no military officer would be allowed to marry. This is because
he believed that single or unmarried men made better soldiers. Saint Valentine was against this law. In fact, he
himself got young couples married secretly.
When the King found out that St. Valentine was secretly
marrying off couples, he put him in jail. Some believe that the
young couples, who got married because of St. Valentine, gave
flowers and letters to him when they visited him in the prison.
There is also a slightly different version of the story. It is said
that when St. Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with his
jailor's daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first
letter to his love, signed as 'Your Valentine'. These words are
still used on cards today.
Stories aside, February has been the month to celebrate love,
for a long time.
You may have seen 2 Angel like kids holding arrows, in various
Valentine’s Day pictures. These angels are called Cupid. Cupid is
the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Cupid is said to be a
mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and
humans with his arrows, making them to fall in love.
