RPAYC Commodore, Ian Audsley, and his team on Kalika won the Broken Bay Sprint Series and placed second in the Inshore Sprint Series. The team had a particular eventful year with Kalika 1 being lost in a strong storm in November in 2014, so the team is now racing Ian’s new Etchell, Kalika 3 AUS1314 (Ian’s Laser is Kalika 2). Kalika 3 achieved 31st place at the Australasian Mid-Winter championships with Ian, Gordon Otten and Bruce Dey on board. Several RPAYC members raced in these and other major Etchells regattas over the past year including David Ritchard, Richie Allanson, Andrew Gavenlock, Iain Murray and Phil Smidmore. Etchells lining up for the start of a Club race RPAYC members enjoyed an action packed year racing in Club, State, National, Australasian and World Championship Etchells One Design (OD) events. Our activities demonstrate the breadth of competition available in the Etchells class, from fun club racing to some of the highest level one-design competition possible. At the elite end of the spectrum, Etchells World Champion 2000 Cameron Miles and his team of Grant Crowle and David Sampson achieved 18th on The Hole Way (AUS1306) at the 2014 Etchells World Championship held at the other Newport (i.e. Rhode Island, USA in June/July 2014). The Hole Way won the NSW State Championships held on Sydney Harbour in February. The team placed a very close second to John Bertrand’s Triad at the hotly contested Etchells National Championship held in Adelaide in January. Cameron and Grant sailed with James Mayo in the Etchells Australasian Mid-Winter Championship held off Mooloolaba in June 2015 achieving second. The Hole Way in the Etchells State Champs - Photo RSYS Geoff Bonouvrie’s Top 40 (AUS1332), and his team of Peter Merrington and Ian McKillop had a very successful year consistently placing in the top 10 at national level, and usually in the top 5. They achieved third at the NSW State Championship, Miramar (AUS1253) owned and helmed by Mark Doyle won the Inshore Sprint Series fifth at the Milson Silver Goblets and ninth at the recent Etchells Australasian and placed second in the Broken Bay Sprint Series, and placed 12th at the Milson Silver Goblets.
