Over 300 boats took to the waters of Waterloo Bay on the shores of the Brisbane 29th Fletcher Walters
suburb of Manly, among the entries 29 young RPAYC sailors made the journey 32nd Morgan Wells
to QLD.
This regatta is considered a key race to determine the ISAF Australian Team to take Optimist Intermediate
on the world in the 2015 ISAF Youth World Championships held in Malaysia later 3rd Findlay Crafter
4th Olivia Williams
this year.
2014 29er Open World Champion, Kurt Hansen and his new crew member, Jim Colley 12th Charlie Hildebrand
(pending YA selection criteria) have been named to represent Australia in the 29er 18th Bayley Taylor
division.
“We’re pretty stoked to win this regatta and the Youth Team spot. Of course there
was a little bit of that extra selection pressure, but our goal here was to get top threes
and apart from one race we managed to do that and slowly managed to get a bit
of a lead in the regatta,” Jim Colley said
The other RPAYC team to qualify is the Hobie 16 sailors, Shaun Connor and Sophie
Renouf. This will be Shaun’s second time representing the country at the World
Championships as he was part of the 29er team in 2014 sailing with Jim Colley.
“It’s been tight racing for the Hobie 16s this week and we just squeezed into the
spot for the Youth Team, which is pretty awesome and we are really stoked about
that. It’s been a long twelve months working hard, but it really paid off and we just
got a text from Jason Waterhouse (Australian Sailing Team) congratulating us. He’s
always been there to help out, which is great.”
The Club’s healthy fleet of Laser 4.7s took on sailing the tight waters of Waterloo Bay
very well and performed strongly. 9 Club boats participated with Nathan Bryant’s
Speedy taking the best placing coming 7th overall.
In the Open Optimist Division 4 Club boats participated with Daniel Links sailing
Mighty Muppet came 20th. In the Intermediate Optimist Division, Finlay Crafter and
Olivia Williams performed very strongly and placed 3rd and 4th.
