the use of color and it was not until Vegas did I
find a group or architects who revelled in breaking
boundaries and saw the wonder of combining color
and music”.
The technology challenges were mere difficult we
were continually modifying existing theatrical lights
or inventing new ways to use them; color changing
was even more difficult. For instance, the pylons at
Bally’s entry used red, blue, green, neon individually
controlled and color mixing was able to create about
250 discernable colors which we then choreographed
to original musical scores.
The advent of color changing LED lighting opened
up a whole new world of design opportunities for
innovative creations, such as the Statosphere Tower,
the world’s first major installation of LED lighting.
In his role as creative director, John’s work further
explored the blending of lighting, music and video
for projects such as Harrah’s Masquerade Tower in
New Orleans, Casino du Montreal in Canada, the
Isle of Capri in Coventry, UK, as well as covering the
complete facades of Harrah’s Atlantic City. During this
period, produced and directed more than twenty five
music, videos, as integral part of the attractions.

“Sonic Wall”, a bas-relief lighting performance over 120
meters long and 10 meters high is a true Tour de Force.
Born as WWII drew to a close and in Europe’s grim
aftermath, John often jokes: “I was born in a black and
white world; movies, TV & magazines were all black
& white as well as Europe’s buildings, so I wanted to
change that. I tried by the use of light in all its forms
to not only enhance the architecture but add another
layer to engage and entertain the viewer”.
After reviewing his more than a thousand projects
worldwide, it’s clear John met those goals.
