I've read this a bunch of times. The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke follows two young boys, Prosper and Bo, as they try to find a home in Venice, Italy — the city they ran away to. There's a private investigator watching their every move, misfit friends, and a strange hint of magic in the objects they steal as they try to get by.

My choice is instant: Half Wild by Robin MacArthur. If you like short stories, this book is a masterpiece, credible, and emotional. This book captures the more hidden world of Vermont, and the multi-generational families scratching out a living. MacArthur, who grew up in southern Vermont, captures real life in a haunting way.
