Today would have been my birthday.

There would be pictures of me everywhere.

My dad wouldn't be far away from my mom.

I would be there instead of that photo.

But instead, a 7-year-old stands in my place.

Today would have been my birthday.

We would be laughing at my dad's jokes,

Making fun of each other’s faults,

Talking about each other's day.

But there is now only empty silence.

Today would have been my birthday.

I would be opening my presents.

New clothes,

A phone

Maybe even car keys.

But the only present I'm granted

Is seeing my family together again.

Today would have been my birthday.

If it wasn't for that one day

Nine years ago.

That day used to be special to me.

Now it's more of a burden.

If it wasn't for that one accident,

Today could've been my birthday.
