Dorothy Fetsch was born in Juneau, Alaska to Rose and Joe Thibodeau. She loved the outdoors, sports and adventures, which later developed into a thirst for travel around the world. She is also remembered for her irrepressible and independent spirit. After graduating from Marylhurst College, she married Bill Fetsch; and they raised their family in northeast Portland. Dorothy will be remembered proudly by her family for her drive and tenacity. She found a way to raise her five children after her marriage ended, earning a master’s degree at Oregon State University after being out of the workforce for nearly 20 years. Much of her career was spent as a guidance counselor for Portland Public Schools. She finished her career at Lincoln High School, where she helped students prepare for college, but also to choose a college that matched their individual educational needs and personality. She also shared her love of golf and served as the girl’s golf coach. She was an avid athlete with a great passion for golf and tennis. She picked up tennis in her 40s and played competitively into her 80s. She also enjoyed being one of the Charbonneau “Niners” and Friday Night Golfers. She Page 11 October 2013 Club Chanpionship / Handicap Tournament Dorothy Fetsch enjoyed years of friendship and laughter with her teammates. She is survived by her brother, Joe; her children, Penelope, Pat, Pam, Mary and Laura and four grandchildren, Lindsay, Natalie, Spencer and Owen. Her son, Peter, preceded her in death. The family especially wants to thank Dr. Kevin Olson and caregivers Ryan, Erin and Charmae and the entire SpringRidge Court staff. This month, Rule 22 addresses the issue of marking and lifting the ball in any area of the course, such as through the green or in a hazard. It states that “if a player considers that another ball might interfere with his play, he may have it lifted. A ball lifted under this Rule must be replaced. The ball must not be cleaned, unless it lies on the putting green. In stroke play, a player required to lift his ball may play first rather than lift the ball.” There is an important note to this Rule which states: “Except on the putting green, a player may not lift his ball solely because he considers that it might interfere with the play of another player. If a player lifts his ball without being asked to do so, he incurs a penalty of one stroke for a breach of Rule 18-2a.” This rule changes when we put in place our local “winter rules,” which allows us to lift, clean and place the ball through the green. So, be careful how you handle the ball if you are asked to lift it any place other than the putting green, so that you give no appearance of “cleaning?? ? your ball. Avoid putting it in your pocket, wiping it with a towel or rubbing it with your hands. Under Rule 21, if a player cleans his ball during play of a hole except to (1) determine if it is unfit for play; (2) for identification, and then only to the extent necessary for identification or (3) because it is assisting or interfering with play, she incurs a one-stroke penalty. Again, thanks to Joann Linville for keeping us informed about the Rules of Golf! So, as we bid farewell to the snowbirds, those of us “year rounders” will hold down the fort and anticipate their return next spring. As always, tee it high everybody, and let it fly!
