Page 12 The Charbonneau Villager November 2013 Aurora Colony World War I Soldier is Remembered This Year in November From the August 25, 1921 Edition of The Aurora Observer Newspaper: “Fifteen hundred people attended the funeral of Fred Ehlen last Sunday. The services were held at the Keil cemetery and conducted by the American Legion Post of Woodburn. The body arrived here last Thursday from its long trip across the ocean; the casket draped in a beautiful American flag. Fred Ehlen was born in Aurora July 13, 1898 and died October 6, 1919* from wounds received in action at the 127th Field Hospital in Bois de Sheurin, state of Muese, France. The young soldier was well known and greatly liked by all in this community and the large attendance at the funeral was in respect of the honor our heroes are held by all. Fred Ehlen was the greatgrandson of Dr. Wilhelm Keil and his wife Louisa. Fred's mother, Aurora, was the daughter of Dr. Keil's son, Frederick, and his father was Henry Ehlen, a Colony musician. Ehlen was serving in the U.S. Army at the time of his death at the end of World War I. The irony of this story is that Freddy had sent a letter to his mother in early October of 1918 telling her not to worry and that he would be fine. She did not learn about his death until November 25, after the formal Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918 and thus was not expecting such news at all. The American flag that was draped over Fred Ehlen’s casket was kept by the Ehlen Family for many years before it was generously donated to the Old Aurora Colony Museum. It is now preserved in the Museum collection and is displayed from time to time.” Now is a great time to view many more Colony Descendant family artifacts, including historical quilts and household artifacts, during our last installment of our year-long “Gifts From the Colony” exhibit, running through the end of December. *Museum Curator’s note: There were a few errors in the Aurora Observer article: first, Fred Ehlen died on October 19, 1918 and not October 6, 1919. Other Colon y News Jane Kirkpatrick will be visiting the Museum on Sunday, November 24, from 12 noon to 4 pm to sign her books, including the reissue of her Change and Cherish series as one volume. This hardcover edition is published by Random House. Admission for Fred Ehlen this special signing will be $5 for seniors and AAA members and $6 for adults under 62. A self-guided tour of the Museum and the four other historic buildings at the corner of 2nd and Liberty streets in Aurora is included. Do you get elbow/forearm pain? A lot of my patients come in with elbow or forearm pain, whether it is from golfing, tennis, or other activities involving the forearms and hand. If left untreated it can lead to carpal tunnel, which presents with numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness into the hand or fingers. Chiropractors treat carpal tunnel and tennis/ golfers elbow with great success. Treatment usually involves deep tissue release techniques to break up the old scar tissue in the tendons and muscles. We can also use more passive techniques like therapeutic ultrasound. If you are experiencing pain or tingling in your forearms or hands please call and make an appointment. We can help! Golf pains?
