The Charbonneau Villager Page 11 November 2013 Mission:Help Our Troops Call Home Charbonneau Book Club By Dorothy Hochhalter our members strive to read books covering many topics. this month we will review a book by Ken Ballen, a former federal prosecutor who spent five years interviewing Islamic radicals who revealed how their family conflicts and frustrations led to lives of violence and jihad. Terrorists in Love introduces us to Almad, Abby and Malik, all true believers who fought for love of faith. Zeddy was not only a believer, but was also involved in the radical politics of Islam and was a colleague of Osama bin Laden. shaheed was a mystical leader who devoted his life to becoming a martyr for Islam. Finally, there is Kalim, an heir to the jihadi throne and fortune who lives an unhappy secret life. We learn their deepest secrets and end up with some understanding of why these young, repressed Islamic men become militant jihadists. this is probably one of the most disturbing books that we have ever chosen to review. please join us on tuesday, november 12 for an in-depth discussion. our next book, written by newcomer Cathy Buchanan, has received glowing reviews for its gripping story about the author’s hometown of niagara Falls. Cathy weaves a historical novel that features romance and is set against the background of the arrival of hydroelectricity during World War I. Bess, the young narrator, finds her family falling apart after her father loses his job as director of the niagara power Company. she meets and falls for a young river man (local hero) who is opposed to harnessing the falls. Her family objects, and she must choose between her love of tom and her family’s desire for her to find a more respectable suitor. the reviews are unanimous in their praise of The Day the Falls Stood Still. I am looking forward to learning more about past history combined with a good story. We will be meeting on tuesday, november 26. springridge provides us with a lovely room and refreshments on the second and fourth tuesdays of each month. Hope to see you there.
