Hi Wilsonville!
Although December is traditionally a month when the droning
hoards find themselves in retail
environments rather than hanging out in the big, pale library,
we nonetheless have a slew of
events planned for when you tire
of canned music and sore feet!
On Tuesday, December 3 at 6
pm is our National Novel Writing
Month wrap-up party. All November long, you’ve been working on your Great American Novel (right?). Now comes the time
to celebrate!
Just in case you haven’t actually written a novel, you can console
yourself on Saturday, December 7
at 9 am by attending the Wilsonville Garden Club Swag Sale. We
like the Garden Club, because
they take care of our beautiful
roses. Come on down and get yer
beautiful holiday arrangements at
rock-bottom prices!
On Tuesday, December 10 at 4
pm, it’s back to writing for adults!
If you’re a writer looking for encouragement and support for your
work, the Writers’ Group meets
regularly to share writing goals
and experiences in a supportive
environment. Set a spell and meet
the regulars!
Thursday, December 12 at 6
pm, it’s the Wilsonville Book
Club, which has been around long
enough that it’s now a veritable institution! This month’s book will
be William Faulkner’s As I Lay
Dying, Faulkner’s harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife
and mother. Narrated in turn by
each of the family members - including Addie herself - the novel
ranges in mood, from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. The
novel is considered one of the
most influential in American fiction in structure, style and drama.
As always, copies are available
for checkout for the month before
the meeting.
On Saturday, December 14 at 2
pm, our ever-popular Booknotes
Concert will feature the Northwest Senior Theater with a full
Christmas show! Bring the smelling salts, and find out more at the
library website.
Wilsonville’s popular Genealogy Club will meet on Monday,
December 16 at 1 pm. Genealogists of the present and future are
invited, and past genealogists will
be there too, if only in spirit! Led
by our own Malia Laughton, you
are certain to find help for knotty
genealogi cal problems, or even
just how to begin. Free, and in the
Oak Room.
Our newest group is creating
some buzz as it meets again on
Wednesday, December 18 at 4
pm. That’s right - It’s the Great
Books Discussion Group! If you
find yourself interested in philosophy and the ‘big questions’ of life,
then please join us each month for
a roundtable discussion of how
modern day issues are reflected
and illuminated by the great Western classic books. This month’s
reading will be Alienated Labor,
by Karl Marx, which just goes to
prove that what ‘they’ say about
libraries just must be true! A copy
of the reading is available at the
library’s Reference Desk. Stop
by or give us a call. Be sure to
whisper.
Last but not least, the holidays
. . . you knew they were coming!
On Tuesday, December 24, we
will close early at 2 pm. Unsurprisingly, we’ll also be closed all
day on December 25, then again
on January 1. Merry Christmas,
Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa . . . take your pick, but be sure
to enjoy yourself.
Upcoming Rotary Events
December is family month
at Rotary. It is a time to honor
those in Rotary and those who
support all we do. We thank
you for all your support during the past year. You helped
raise over $6,000 to eradicate
Polio. You donated your time
and energy at the summer concert series. You helped raise
money for Wilsonville schools
with omelet/pancake breakfasts. You honored Charbonneau vets. You gave your time
and money to support Through
a Child’s Eyes at Coffee Creek
Correctional Facility.
You
supported Chess for Success
in Wilsonville middle schools.
You also helped secure a grant
to install solar electricity and
solar water purification systems in Tanzania. Lastly, you
helped us honor Wilsonville’s
First Citizen and raise money
for all our activities at our
Heart of Gold auction/dinner.
Thank you for your ‘Service
Above Self.’
In December, we will have
three interesting speakers. Our
lunch meetings start at noon at the
Al Kader Shrine Center in Wilsonville. Come join us. If you are

December 5: Phillip Margolin, co-founder of Chess for
Success - Athletics for the Mind.
Phillip will talk about how playing chess helps school children
develop their learning skills.
December 12: Linda & Paul
Erickson, Save the Cheetahs.
Linda and Paul will talk about the
plight of these endangered cats
and what is being done to save
them.
December 19: Drew Shavere,
Columbia Benefits Group. Drew
will help us make sense of the affordable care act and your insurance options.
Good News for Skiers
Skiers 75 and older will ski
free at Mt. Hood Meadows.
Yes, I said "FREE." This just
proves there are a few benefits
to growing old. Ski buses to
Mt Hood Meadows will start
January 8, 2014, leaving from
Rolling Hills Church located
off I-205 (3550 SW Borland
Road in Tualatin).
This is a great way to sit
back and let the bus driver
and hostess do their best to
make it a very pleasant experience. Coffee, rolls and fruit
will be served on the ride up

and snacks and drinks on the way
home.
The Bus leaves Rolling Hills
Church at 7:45 am and will be
back at 6 pm. Many skiers on the
bus have been coming for over
40 years. This is the Best way to
chase away the winter blues! Remember, when it is raining here,
chances are, it is snowing in the
mountains. "Let it snow, Let it
snow, Let it snow."
