A PARADE OF HISTORY IN WAXHAW
The charming buildings that line
main street, the historic homes that
border the community, the walkover bridge with the train rumbling
beneath, the quaint cafés filled
with flavorful farm fresh foods,
Waxhaw has much to offer. The
majority of which, is deeply rooted
in its heritage. In this issue of the
Village News we’re highlighting our
heritage and how it connects to
our present. Because, as the saying goes, “you can’t know where
you are going until you appreciate
where you’ve been.”
Get a taste for the history of food in
Waxhaw from a long time resident
(pg.27). Discover ways to revitalize old furniture for your home in
(pg.18 ). Take in the history of the
newly restored Duncan McDonald
building on (pg.25) and front and
center – find out more about the
history of Waxhaw parades.

INDEPENDENCE DAY
PARADE
Waxhaw’s Independence Day
Parade as we know it today began
during the centennial celebration of
Waxhaw in March of 1989. A yearlong celebration ensued that year to
celebrate Waxhaw’s 100th birthday
and with it the birth of parades that
give residents a glimpse at our past
and a slice of old-fashioned Americana and Norman Rockwell flair.
At the time of its incorporation on
March 7, 1889, the corporate limits of the Town extended one-half
mile each way from the depot of
the Georgia, Carolina and Northern
Railway with the depot at the center which was located at the present intersection of North Church
Street and South West Main Street
(Highway 75). The officers of the
Town consisted of a Mayor, three
Town of Waxhaw NC
commissioners, a marshal and a
cotton-weigher for the Town. The
railroad, agriculture, and the cotton
mill were the major influences on
Waxhaw’s growth and it has long
been a purpose to preserve our
proud agricultural and railroad heritage while embracing a passion for
the future vision of the Town.
The Waxhaw Independence Day
Celebration complete with parade,
beach party and fireworks will take
place on Saturday July 2nd.
**Parking is available at the BB&T parking
lot, the grass lot on the corner of Blythe
Mill Road and Highway 16, and any public
parking lot downtown. After the fireworks,
Waxhaw police will enforce a Right Turn
Only rule exiting the parking lots.**
