Located at 12047 US Hwy 70, the gardens will actually be accessed from Mott Street, located in the Historic Depot Square of Arlington. Site development is currently underway in partnership with the Arlington Garden Club. Parks Director Kevin Carter states “We will be creating a unique opportunity for citizens of all ages to become a part of the Depot Square Community Garden by offering raised beds to grow fruits and vegetables of their choice. Families and organizations will be able to grow healthy food and to encourage a healthy community within Arlington.” Site improvements will be ongoing in anticipation of having beds available for Summer and Fall crops. The Depot Square Community Garden will include features of raised beds, efficient watering system, an orchard area, berry bushes, composting bins, and an outdoor classroom. “Not only is this a location to grow produce,” Carter continued, “but it will also be a site for many educational opportunities for the community.” The partnership with the Arlington Garden Club will facilitate the sharing of best gardening practices. “Digging in the dirt is my passion,” states Virginia Vierkandt, Master Gardner and member of the Arlington Garden Club, “Watching seeds sprout, grow, and harvest the fruits of our labor.” Founding Partner Sponsorships will be available during the initial stages of development. Any individual, organization, or business is encouraged to contact Parks and Recreation Director, Kevin Carter at (901) 867-4980 or [email protected] for sponsorship or volunteering information.
