It's not exactly easy to present a case

When your opponent isn't alive.

When all that's left is their cold, dead face,

And into the false clues you must dive.

It's not exactly easy to stand your ground

When you're representing a killer.

When the evidence piling against you is found,

And the courtroom becomes a thriller.

"This boy died too young," the lawyer states,

This world deserves to have him back."

"He was sickly and dying," I debate,

"Please, just cut us some slack."

"His parents are mourning, he was only five."

"He had stage three cancer, he was going to die."

"He was caught, trapped in a car stuck in drive."

"In two hours, he would've been food for flies."

"The state of his sickness does not defend

The actions of this murder."

"The child's life would have soon come to and end,

There's no reason for this court order."

My client sat behind me, in his crisp suit.

He was growing nervous, and so was I.

Our statements were invalid, our points were moot,

And in that moment, all I could do was reply.

"The boy is gone and he's not coming back,

His time is up and he is dead.

There's no way his life can get back on track,

His soul belongs with those gone instead."

Waiting for the judge and jury to seal my fate,

I sank my head as I lost face.

The trial was over and I had lost my case,

Since it's not very easy to play Devil's Advocate.
