“The test shows that some of your cancer cells, Charlotte, were destroyed, but a large number weren’t,” he continued and then added, ”You won’t be going home until we destroy more of it. And if that doesn’t happen quickly, we may have to resort to other methods of getting rid of the cancer.” My mom didn’t reply. She just stared straight ahead. She was one of the strongest women I knew and I couldn’t bear to see the cancer taking control of her. I ran out of the room, and straight for the bathroom. I stayed in there and cried in an isolated stall, wondering why this was happening to mom. She didn’t deserve this. I stayed there for a while, until Nicole found me.

“Is there any way we can see her before she goes into surgery?” I managed to squeak out.

“Unfortunately, she was already put to sleep with anesthesia,” Nicole informed me. This day just kept getting worse. I just wanted to crawl up in a ball and cry.

A little while later I heard the voice of my aunt calling, “Hazel...Hazel...we need to talk.” I sniffled a little and she found which I stall I was cowering in. She knocked, but I didn’t reply.

“Haze, please,” she cooed, trying to get me out of there.

“I’m not...coming...out,” I said between sobs.

“Come on. Let’s go take a walk, hon,” she said in tone that told me she wanted me to be happy. I decided it would be good to vent to someone I trusted. We left the bathroom, and walked down the hallway.
