There are many things to be learned from my mistakes when I started fly fishing. One of my worst mistakes was only using dry flies. Trout are more likely to see wet flies in the water than a dry fly on the surface. Statistically a trout feeds on the surface only twenty percent of the time and you have a much better chance of hooking one if you fish below the surface. Another mistake I made was forgetting to bring a net fishing one day and l lost three fish trying to pull them close enough to the bank to grab them with my bare hands. When I tried to do this I had to hold the rod very high and this gave the fish an opportunity to thrash and spit the hooks out of their mouths. My final crucial mistake that I regret, was trying to fish for stocked trout with flies. The stocked trout were raised in fish farms and have no clue what natural food looks like. These fish base what they eat solely on smell and taste which makes them very unlikely to recognize the insects that float by them in the water as a food source. I hope that knowing this you will be less likely to make the same mistakes I did and will have more time to go out and catch fish.
