WHAT TO DO IN ICELAND

A mystical place full of light for half the year, and darkness for the other half, Iceland is a beautiful island full of natural wonders and culture. With a population of around 300,000, Iceland has more tourists than residents each year. The native language to this peaceful island is Icelandic, but almost everyone there is also fluent in English. When you are on this island, it almost seems like you are in another world with everything there being very peaceful and the crime rate of the country being one of the lowest worldwide. Iceland, although small, is an astounding beauty and should be at the top of every vacation list.

The capital of Iceland is the quirky town of Reykjavík highlighted with a church of architectural beauty at its center. A statue of Leif Erikson, the Viking who first discovered Iceland, also stands confidently right at its heart. This small town has many amazing restaurants, cafes, and bakeries as well. Most of the food in Iceland is similar to the food in the U.S. but with more of an influence on seafood and lamb since that is what is available to them. There is also some interesting traditional foods like whale, and contemporary foods like the Icelandic hot dog. Another attraction near the airport is the blue lagoon, a spa and geothermal hot spring.

Next, make sure to hit Iceland's golden circle. On this drive, discover the true wonders and beauties of Iceland. This includes all of its nature highlights like the waterfalls, geysers, puffins, glacier lagoons, and beautiful beaches. There are also many scenic hikes and lagoons to swim in. A favorite of many who come is seeing the glacier lagoon at sunset, which leaves people speechless. If you come in the winter, you can also experience the majestic northern lights. There are many different waterfalls, all unique in their own way and definitely worth seeing. The geysers shoot 40 feet into the sky and roar with power. Although Iceland is a little cold for swimming at the beach, they are still great for a leisurely walk and some even have glistening black sand. Everything is very nonchalant on this island and drive at any pace. Every sight on this circle will leave tourists breathless.

Another amazing attraction is the glacier hikes. Game of Thrones, Tomb Raider, and many movies have all come to these glaciers for their breathtaking beauty. Tourists can choose different levels of difficulty, and hiking on Iceland’s vast glaciers with a pick ax in hand is a once in a lifetime experience for everyone to enjoy.

Many have come to the conclusion that the country of Iceland must be from another world. With its astounding natural attractions, cute little capital, and native people who are so peaceful and friendly, it is a wonder that it has yet to be discovered by hordes of tourists. Embrace the cold, and come at any time of year; in the winter where all the attractions are glowing in the dark with beauty, or in the summer where rainbows of light frame nature's glamor. Experience mother nature at her best, and discover Iceland and everything it has to offer.
