"This was the boy who saw you last night?” she asked.

The girl nodded, keeping her head bowed.

Saw her last night? Sam’s forehead wrinkled in confusion, before he realized what was going on. The puzzle pieces began falling together in his head.

There had been fur in Lord Bryan’s room that had gotten on his clothes, which was the same color as the werewolf he had seen last night. In addition, the girl was missing last night, when it had been the full moon. Werewolves roamed during the full moon. And the people killed were powerful noblemen, whose absence would weaken the power of the kingdom greatly, thus benefiting the Queen of Astoria.

Sam gasped in shock, spun around, and sprinted.

“He knows. Get rid of him.”

Those words, spoken so calmly by the Queen, only fueled Sam's desperate escape. But the servant girl slipped out a knife, hidden in a sheath in her boots, and threw it.

The Queen walked back along the corridor, not pausing to glance at Sam’s body. Her secret was safe now, and no one could stand her way.
