I stopped when I passed by my old friends' mother's house. I stood there for a minute looking at the yard and remembering all the days I spent there as a kid. My childhood was not perfect, but it was at least fun when I was allowed to play at my friend Brandon's house. There was a sudden loud and ear-shattering scream. I instantly ran inside to figure out what happened. I knew that it was only Brandon's mom that lived there now, so I was worried that if something happened she would not be able to protect herself.

I began calling her name and checking every room, until I heard another noise. There was the sound of running footsteps and a cellar door slamming shut. I ran to the back of the house to see who had just escaped, but I was only able to see the back of their black hoodie as they sprinted away from the back yard. Everything inside of me wanted to run after them, but I knew I would never be able to track them down. At that moment I became more aware of what I might find when I discovered Brandon's mom. There must have been a motive, and my mind raced to figure it out.

My heart pounded as I continued looking for her. I then walked into the office and saw her. Brandon's mom was lying there on the ground, a knife stuck into her chest. My mouth dropped and I could feel my heart inside my throat. I suddenly became aware of everything in my surroundings. I could hear the wind blowing against the leaves on the trees and the quiet creeks and moans of the old house. It must have been minutes before I came to and began to realize again the situation I was in.
