folded over one another, standing straight and staring at the wall ahead. And, silently, we went down and down and down.

In the center of the room there was a large table across from the chair that was clearly meant for me that sat three seats. Two of the three seats were filled by men, as equally large and looming as the one who led me into the room. Everyone took their seats. We sat in silence before the oldest of the three men, with greying, thinning hair and deep set wrinkles that portrayed a constant look of deep thought, spoke.

"Jake, we have brought you here because we know of your capability and see it as a tool we can use in our favor."

"Where is 'here' exactly?" I inquired.

"We are in the J. Edgar Hoover Building, the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters," he replied.

"Why exactly do you need me?" I asked.

"We hope that you will be able to use your mind-reading gift to help solve crime. You will be the first to interview any criminal. By using your 'powers', so to speak, we will be able to know the thoughts that pass through the suspects mind while he or she is in that room with you. By doing this, we will get more valid evidence than has ever been possible in just one interrogation. This will be your full time job. You will be supplied with living quarters, food, water, and anything else you would like, to a certain extent of course, all provided by us."

I had difficulty wrapping my mind around this. "What about my mom and sister?"

"Your family will also be taken care of,d" he replied, "They will be able to come and visit you on occasion and you may write to them as frequently as you desire. However, you will always be accompanied by some form of guard when leaving the building, so we would advise that they come here to visit you, rather than the other way around."

"Okay, how long will I be doing this?"

"You will be working with the government for as long as you are needed. You begin tomorrow, you must go now."
