By Anna D.
My feet carry me through the forest
making a steady, percussive noise among the chatter
of squirrels and the roar of predators unseen.
thump, thump, thump
while a bitter breeze whips my face raw
I think of fire and of warmth
I fight the wind
Valiant I am when I march off to war
on this creature I call a friend
Cared for, he bears me to encampments
of men in armor, and there we shall engage
the city of infidels in a siege
I think of my liege lord in his pavilion
I befriend the wind
Waves I fear not, for I am master of the seas.
this galleon is faithful to me alone,
the storms she ignores, for the gales fill her sails.
I have guided her from Gibraltar to Calcutta,
full of pride and gold.
I think of family back in Portugal
I watch the wind
As a passenger on this coal-powered thing
I cannot help but wonder if this is real.
traveling from the East Coast to California was an adventure
for explorers; now look at me!
I will work there, find a home, fulfill my dreams
I think of the future
I ride the wind
