The Diocese of San Jose Remembers Jennifer Gonzales
A young woman who grew up in
Santa Clara County lost her life and
the life of her unborn child on March
9 when she, along with two colleagues,
were gunned down at Pathway House
in Yountville by an Army veteran who
received treatment there for post-trau-
matic stress disorder (PTSD).
Jennifer Gonzales worked as a clini-
cal psychologist with the U.S. Depart-
ment of Veterans Aff airs and spent time
at Pathway House helping veterans fi nd
academic and vocational programs to
return to school.
Gonzales was a 2003 graduate of
Saint Francis High School in Mountain
View.
On March 11, Saint Francis High
School posted this statement on its
website.
“It is with great sorrow that we must
inform you that our Lancer family suf-
fered a terrible loss, Friday, March 9,
when graduate Jennifer Gonzales ’03
and her unborn child were killed in the
tragic hostage situation at the Veterans
Home of California in Yountville.
“The thoughts and prayers of our
entire Saint Francis community are with
Jennifer’s family and with the families
and friends of all the victims of this
terrible tragedy. We are grieving in
solidarity for the senseless loss of such
an intelligent, compassionate young
woman, and her colleagues, who dedi-
cated – and ultimately sacrifi ced – their
lives to serve our veterans most in need
of mental health support.
“A 2003 graduate of Saint Francis
High School, Jennifer was an excellent
student who will be remembered by her
teachers and classmates for her gentle
heart, curious mind and bright spirit.
“At this time, Saint Francis High
School requests privacy from the me-
dia as we grieve and pray together as a
community. We are focused on privately
honoring the lives of Jennifer and her
unborn child and providing support to
Jennifer’s family and our alumni, stu-
dents and parents who are all grieving
at this time.”
Gonzales is survived by her husband
T.J. Shushereba, her parents Michael and
Kathleen, and her brothers Stephen,
Timothy and Gregory.
In addition, Gonzales was remem-
bered at schools on March 14 at Student
Walkouts in response to gun violence at
schools across the Diocese of San Jose.
